    DVB-RCS return link radio resource management for broadband satellite systems using fade mitigation techniques at ka band

    Current Broadband Satellite systems supporting DVB-RCS at Ku band have static physical layer in order not to complicate their implementation. However at Ka band frequencies and above an adaptive physical layer wherein the physical layer parameters are dynamically modified on a per user basis is necessary to counteract atmospheric attenuation. Satellite Radio Resource Management (RRM) at the Medium Access Control (MAC) layer has become an important issue given the emphasis placed on Quality of Service (QoS) provided to the Users. The work presented here tackles the problem of Satellite RRM for Broadband Satellite systems using DVB-RCS where a fully adaptive physical layer is envisaged at Ka band frequencies. The impact of adaptive physical layer and user traffic conditions on the MAC layer functions is analyzed and an algorithm is proposed for the RRM process. Various physical layer issues associated with the resource management problem are also analyzed

    Satellite system performance assessment for in-flight entertainment and air traffic control

    Concurrent satellite systems have been proposed for IFE (In-Flight Entertainment) communications, thus demonstrating the capability of satellites to provide multimedia access to users in aircraft cabin. At the same time, an increasing interest in the use of satellite communications for ATC (Air Traffic Control) has been motivated by the increasing load of traditional radio links mainly in the VHF band, and uses the extended capacities the satellite may provide. However, the development of a dedicated satellite system for ATS (Air Traffic Services) and AOC (Airline Operational Communications) seems to be a long-term perspective. The objective of the presented system design is to provide both passenger application traffic access (Internet, GSM) and a high-reliability channel for aeronautical applications using the same satellite links. Due to the constraints in capacity and radio bandwidth allocation, very high frequencies (above 20 GHz) are considered here. The corresponding design implications for the air interface are taken into account and access performances are derived using a dedicated simulation model. Some preliminary results are shown in this paper to demonstrate the technical feasibility of such system design with increased capacity. More details and the open issues will be studied in the future of this research work

    Performances of a GNSS receiver for space-based applications

    Space Vehicle (SV) life span depends on its station keeping capability. Station keeping is the ability of the vehicle to maintain position and orientation. Due to external perturbations, the trajectory of the SV derives from the ideal orbit. Actual positioning systems for satellites are mainly based on ground equipment, which means heavy infrastructures. Autonomous positioning and navigation systems using Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) can then represent a great reduction in platform design and operating costs. Studies have been carried out and the first operational systems, based on GPS receivers, become available. But better availability of service could be obtained considering a receiver able to process GPS and Galileo signals. Indeed Galileo system will be compatible with the current and the modernized GPS system in terms of signals representation and navigation data. The greater availability obtained with such a receiver would allow significant increase of the number of point solutions and performance enhancement. For a mid-term perspective Thales Alenia Space finances a PhD to develop the concept of a reconfigurable receiver able to deal with both the GPS system and the future Galileo system. In this context, the aim of this paper is to assess the performances of a receiver designed for Geosynchronous Earth Orbit (GEO) applications. It is shown that high improvements are obtained with a receiver designed to track both GPS and Galileo satellites. The performance assessments have been used to define the specifications of the future satellite GNSS receiver

    Enumeration of m-ary cacti

    The purpose of this paper is to enumerate various classes of cyclically colored m-gonal plane cacti, called m-ary cacti. This combinatorial problem is motivated by the topological classification of complex polynomials having at most m critical values, studied by Zvonkin and others. We obtain explicit formulae for both labelled and unlabelled m-ary cacti, according to i) the number of polygons, ii) the vertex-color distribution, iii) the vertex-degree distribution of each color. We also enumerate m-ary cacti according to the order of their automorphism group. Using a generalization of Otter's formula, we express the species of m-ary cacti in terms of rooted and of pointed cacti. A variant of the m-dimensional Lagrange inversion is then used to enumerate these structures. The method of Liskovets for the enumeration of unrooted planar maps can also be adapted to m-ary cacti.Comment: LaTeX2e, 28 pages, 9 figures (eps), 3 table

    This paper presents the framework and the activities of a PhD research work in progress supported by Alcatel Alenia Space in collaboration with TeSA and SUPAERO. It deals with Connection Admission Control (CAC) for Telecommunications Systems with adaptive links according to propagation conditions. Indeed, in high frequency bands communications, deep fadings may occur because of atmospheric propagation losses. The mitigation techniques used to counteract fades impacts the system capacity, therefore the CAC mechanism. The CAC which only uses current capacity information may lead to intolerable dropping of admitted connection, and thus breaches the QoS guarantees made upon connection acceptance. New CAC mechanisms shall be studied to take into account the capacity variation and the mitigation techniques (IFMT) developed to compensate the attenuation in Ka and above frequency range

    Cross-layer optimization of unequal protected layered video over hierarchical modulation

    Abstract-unequal protection mechanisms have been proposed at several layers in order to improve the reliability of multimedia contents, especially for video data. The paper aims at implementing a multi-layer unequal protection scheme, which is based on a Physical-Transport-Application cross-layer design. Hierarchical modulation, in the physical layer, has been demonstrated to increase the overall user capacity of a wireless communications. On the other hand, unequal erasure protection codes at the transport layer turned out to be an efficient method to protect video data generated by the application layer by exploiting their intrinsic properties. In this paper, the two techniques are jointly optimized in order to enable recovering lost data in case the protection is performed separately. We show that the cross-layer design proposed herein outperforms the performance of hierarchical modulation and unequal erasure codes taken independently

    Duration mismatch compensation using four-covariance model and deep neural network for speaker verification

    International audienceDuration mismatch between enrollment and test utterances still remains a major concern for reliability of real-life speaker recognition applications. Two approaches are proposed here to deal with this case when using the i-vector representation. The first one is an adaptation of Gaussian Probabilistic Linear Discriminant Analysis (PLDA) modeling, which can be extended to the case of any shift between i-vectors drawn from two distinct distributions. The second one attempts to map i-vectors of truncated segments of an utterance to the i-vector of the full segment, by the use of deep neural networks (DNN). Our results show that both new approaches outperform the standard PLDA by about 10 % relative, noting that these back-end methods could complement those quantifying the i-vector uncertainty during its extraction process, in the case of duration gap

    Typicality extraction in a Speaker Binary Keys model

    International audienceIn the field of speaker recognition, the recently proposed notion of "Speaker Binary Key" provides a representation of each acoustic frame in a discriminant binary space. This approach relies on an unique acoustic model composed by a large set of speaker specific local likelihood peaks (called specificities). The model proposes a spatial coverage where each frame is characterized in terms of neighborhood. The most frequent specificities, picked up to represent the whole utterance, generate a binary key vector. The flexibility of this modeling allows to capture non-parametric behaviors. In this paper, we introduce a concept of "typicality" between binary keys, with a discriminant goal. We describe an algorithm able to extract such typicalities, which involves a singular value decomposition in a binary space. The theoretical aspects of this decomposition as well as its potential in terms of future developments are presented. All the propositions are also experimentally validated using NIST SRE 2008 framework
